![A Day in the Life of Vicki Skinner in Costa RIca : Sunday (Sept. 20) I met up with new buds Elena Ross, Diane Hunter & Iris for a spin at the FUNNEST THING in Sabana Park - riding a SEGWAY!!!!
First off, in the 5 years I've been coming to Costa Rica & living here - I'd NEVER actually gone INSIDE of Sabana Park!!
I'd seen SEGWAYs in Sarasota, FL & San Diego & had REALLY wanted to do them but in the States, they're often around $100 - out of my budget so when Chappell & her daughter Tammy gave us the opportunity to take a sample spin on the Segway I JUMPED on it in a heartbeat!!
I was AWESOME FUN for EVERYONE (over 8) on these eco-friendly electric scooters!!! & EASY!!! I was concerned since, as many of you know, I'm not to stable just walking - but it was a BREEZE!!!!
Sebastian was our Guide EXTRAORDINAIRE!! He spoke good English & was FUN!!!
It's the BEST (& laziest) way to see Sabana Park - Costa Rica's version of Central or Golden Gate Park that's had LOTS of improvements like a new Roller Skating Rink & the new Power Aide Jogging Trails plus all the other FUN in the park like Kite Flying, horseback riding, the mini-Zip Line/Canopy Tour (GREAT for someone unsure if they can handle it!!), the lake, LOTS of sports being played & picnicing & various other things happening (LOTS of concerts/events). In Feb. the Museo de Arte Costarricense should be re-opening!!
This is a TOTAL MUST CHECK OUT this TOTALLY FUN activity!! Get a group of friends/family together to do a Day in the Park!! (they have a picnic table right in front).

![CHARITY - GRACIAS COSTA RICA - Gifting Back to the people of Costa Rica Group : EVERY DAY I bless the opportunity I have been given to live in Costa Rica!
I feel as guests in this country either living here or visiting as a tourist, it’s REALLY IMPORTANT to show our gratitude by GIVING BACK in some form to the wonderful people & land of this AWESOME country!
There are MANY ways to do that:
Volunteering, giving financially or giving things that are needed or things that you no longer need/are using.
This belief has created the start of “Gracias Costa Rica” http://GraciasCostaRica.com – a sort of clearing house where people can do it on the material donation level.
Money raised from it will go into a sort of "Emergency Reserve" for when small needs come up from various charities (though "things" are needed the most). This is also a program working
[note, this is NOT a hand-out program. Groups that benefit from this MUST have in place programs where the recipients MUST do something to give back either to their own program, others or pay a small fee for items which is more empowering for the recipient]).
HOW IT WORKS:
My home in Escazu (conveniently located ON Calle Vieja near Calle Country Club) has become a Donation Drop-Off Point for many charities/groups around Costa Rica.
Depending on how YOU designate the, items will either be donated to various groups which we will give to people in their organization that somehow give SOMETHING be it a small payment, time or something (the intention is NOT to give handouts as that is VERY dis-empowering/enabling to people).
The nicer things will be available for sale to create an Emergency Reserve to help meet needs as they come up from for LOTS of different charities in Costa Rica.
Tour Guides/Drivers with Enjoying Costa Rica Tours can pick things up at hotels when they are in the area (designated hotels throughout the country coming in the future)
The nicer things are kept here (unless you desire them to go specifically towards an organization/cause) and set up at my place (with the dream one day of setting up an official Consignment Shop where someone donates the space and recipients and volunteers can run and sell to the public) where you/the public are invited to come see what we have for sale (by appointment only).
Every few months we do a Yard Sale. What is left over goes to various groups around Costa Rica (we work in conjunction with Enjoying Costa Rica Tours who delivers/picks up
they sell what they received to their people for nominal fees (200-colones, etc.) so they can feel good/empowered that they contributed somehow, or they do some sort of volunteer work to earn the items.
We then start over with collecting items.
(in time our intention is to create Drop-Off Points at various conveniently located hotels in key cities throughout Costa Rica to make it easier for you to get things to us)
The list of needs is endless (I'm working on a more detailed list and will add that when it's done)!! A few examples are:
Shoes
School Supplies (HUMONGOUSLY needed!!)
Food (especially the staples rice, beans, oil, salt, pasta, tomato sauce, tuna)
Household items including appliances and furniture
Medical related supplies/equipment
Books (in Spanish especially but also in English)
Clothes
Learning English books and tapes
Educationally oriented items
Games
Toys (non-battery operated ideally since batteries are expensive)
Baby supplies, office supplies (especially fax machines as even very few of the police stations even have them), computers, building materials (especially roofing nails for the metal roofs they have here), umbrellas, rain ponchos, coats, boots, tarps (rainy season is in process - WHATEVER (as long as it works)!!!

Cross over the broken bamboo bridge & park on the grass - with your nose facing forward, making as much room for other cars.
TAKING A BUS:
FROM SAN JOSE: Take the BLUE "Santa Ana-Calle Vieja" bus from inside the Coca-Cola Bus Terminal & get off at Calle Country Club. Walk back 75 meters, crossing over the little yellow bridge. There's an iron trash box & then our driveway.
COMING FROM SANTA ANA: Take the same bus to the Calle Country Club stop. Go straight 50 meters, cross over the little yellow bridge, then cross the street & I'm the FIRST driveway (on the NORTH side of the street).
NOTE: We're no longer allowed to put balloons out on the street (this is a hidden paradise where we have NO shut gate, NO guard - nada!! Where the neighbors feel safe with that but since more "things" are happenin' these days - for our safety, the owners are wanting to keep it that way hence the descretion so it's REALLY IMPORTANT that YOU stay REAL conscious to these directions!!

I first saw Mamma Mia it was in Ft. Lauderdale with the Sing-Along version that had the words at the bottom (like Karaoke)!!! It was SOOOOO MUCH FUN & most of the audience was playin', singin', & dancin' along!!! When I saw in in CR, it had the movies words at the bottom - in Spanish - so, like most of us, we didn't know the words to the songs (I was shocked at how MUCH I sang "la la la" to the words!!)
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS???
Since Katrina is coming over every other Monday now to do Metamorphic Technique (10am Mon. if ya want to join us), we may just start doing some sort of on-going FUN or empowering movie night on Monday nights!!

We're asking everyone that desires to bring some sort of movie JUNK FOOD to share with at least 10+ people & whatever you're drinking (this tends not to be an alcohol crowd [there may be kids here]). I'll provide water.

![Vicki Skinner's Childhood Home - an Eichler Home in Orange, Calif. (the Fairhaven Tract) used in the lates "Meet the Volkswagen Family" commercials!!! : This is the COOL house I (Vicki Skinner & my brothers Michael, Billy & JB) grew up in - an Eichler Home in Orange, California - the Fairhaven Tract. They are TOTALLY "BITCHEN" homes!!
Ours was 3/4 glass, U-shaped with a big atrium in the middle of it!! In the middle, it was like one long open room divided by sections - living room, dining room & family room (like a loft in a way). It was REALLY BRIGHT (with floor to ceiling windows!!) & the heating/air conditioning vents were under the floors so your feet were always warm!!
I think my mom bought the house back in '63 for around $37,000. At the time we sold it upon her death in '04, it was one of the highest sold Eichler homes BECAUSE it was in mint/original condition & a hot property at the time & was again when we sold it for $675,000!! (I LOVE the guy that bought it because he [like MANY that LOVE Eichler's] has such respect for the energy & importance of our family home!! Which is why it was VERY important for me for him to get it!!).

This is a story of the filming the Volkswagen TV commercial in front of our house. I have sent most of this by e-mail to you. This is just dragging it all together in one place.
This is the story line of "Max the Talking VW" as Bruce understands it:
The house next door to ours (the Skinner's old house) has been bought by a 1968 Volkswagen Bug. My understanding is that he has a wife (a 1968 Volkswagen Bus) and four children (2009 or 2010 Volkswagen cars). He wanted a house where all of his children could have their own garage. He liked the Eichler houses but could not find any with four garages. Therefore, he bought the house next door to us and had it remodeled to fit his family’s needs.
On Wednesday April 15, 2009 a crew of about 20 people showed up and started building a façade in front of the house.
By Wednesday or Thursday evening the modification was well under way,
By Friday evening the transformation was complete.

About 20 feet in front of the car was this SUV going the same speed in reverse taking pictures. This camera had a transmitter on the video output so the director could see what the camera saw without actually riding in the SUV. Good driving!!!
One thing I saw that I thought was particularly funny. One day they were shooting a scene where a car was driven away from the house and down the street. I noted that after the car was driven into the street, the driver got out of the car, another driver got in and backed the car back into the driveway. This happened several times. How is that for specialization?
It was all very exciting and rewarding. Bruce wrote "They paid us $1,000 a day for the use of our driveway and front yard. I’m not sure how they count days. I think they intended to use our driveway and yard for only two days, they paid us $2,000. They used our driveway for only one day and used the side yard almost every day they were shooting. I told them I had enough fun that they didn’t need to pay us anything.

Ours was 3/4 glass, U-shaped with a big atrium in the middle of it!! In the middle, it was like one long open room divided by sections - living room, dining room & family room (like a loft in a way). It was REALLY BRIGHT (with floor to ceiling windows!!) & the heating/air conditioning vents were under the floors so your feet were always warm!!
I think my mom bought the house back in '63 for around $37,000. At the time we sold it upon her death in '04, it was one of the highest sold Eichler homes BECAUSE it was in mint/original condition & a hot property at the time & was again when we sold it for $675,000!! (I LOVE the guy that bought it because he [like MANY that LOVE Eichler's] has such respect for the energy & importance of our family home!! Which is why it was VERY important for me for him to get it!!).

This is a story of the filming the Volkswagen TV commercial in front of our house. I have sent most of this by e-mail to you. This is just dragging it all together in one place.
This is the story line of \"Max the Talking VW\" as Bruce understands it:
The house next door to ours (the Skinner's old house) has been bought by a 1968 Volkswagen Bug. My understanding is that he has a wife (a 1968 Volkswagen Bus) and four children (2009 or 2010 Volkswagen cars). He wanted a house where all of his children could have their own garage. He liked the Eichler houses but could not find any with four garages. Therefore, he bought the house next door to us and had it remodeled to fit his family’s needs.
On Wednesday April 15, 2009 a crew of about 20 people showed up and started building a façade in front of the house.
By Wednesday or Thursday evening the modification was well under way,
By Friday evening the transformation was complete.

![COOL BAMBOO BIRD FEEDER : This is a REALLY COOL Bird Feeder one of my workers created with just some pieces of bamboo & some rope!!
I originally had this created for this one BEAUTIFUL BoBo/MotMot bird who, if he's not there when I come out in the morning, I just call him "Mr. BoBo - Banana's" (or whatever) & literally, within 5 minutes, 98% of the time not only does he come but about 10-15 other birds do as do 1-5 squirrels who eat the Sunflower/Girasol seeds I give them (before finding the sunflower seeds [I get them the cheapest at the big market in Piedades de Santa Ana & a bit more at Saretto's] I was in constant battle with the squirrels [aka "Bandito's"] over them eating whatever I was putting out for the birds!!).
Here are some pics so you can see how it's done in case you want to make your own.

COSTA RICA WAS HIT BY A 6.2 EARTHQUAKE ON JAN. 8, '09. Not overly strong by traditional standards & we were blessed that it was in a more rural location about 20 miles north of San Jose, hence didn't have the casualties it could have been worse but it was freaky in that because of the motion & recent rains, it seems like in some ways the ground just opened up taking whatever was in it's way which you can see in some pictures at:

THINGS TO HAVE TO HELP BE A BIT MORE PREPARED FOR FUTURE EARTHQUAKES IN COSTA RICA
DARE TO BE PREPARED!!!
This blurb is a compilation of info I’ve pieced together from LOTS of resources, as well as my observations/experiences growing up in California & experiencing LOTS of earthquakes of varying magnitudes!! I’m a BIG believer that having information helps us be more EMPOWERMENT so WHEN something happens (& it WILL living in Costa Rica!!), we can hopefully react more consciously hence handle everything better & be able to help others more!! This document is NOT the gospel & I’m NOT a professional (though I’m waiting for a friend’s response to it that’s out there on the line as a Emergency Response Expert).
I used to keep a “Bag” filled with the items listed below. It was a duffel bag on wheels so it’s easy to grab & drag out. Now I keep most of the things in 2 places but writing this I’m thinking it might be smart to go back to that bag again - just in case. A Backpack is good if you want to put the ultra basics in.
One “hit” I got after one of my friends was given 20 min. to run into her home that was destroyed in the last big San Francisco earthquake was to have one small bag that if you HAD to run for your life - what would be the MOST IMPORTANT things you’d want to take like documents, photos, jewels, special keepsakes.
Another “hit” I JUST got was to batten down the hatches some more so I had my friend looped extra wire tied a few times around screws - securing mirrors, clocks & wall art.
Assume if a major earthquake/disaster happens that most everything will be closed down at least for a few days &/or power has resumed &/or supplies will be limited/non-existent - banks, stores, gas stations, public transportation (to say nothing of restaurants!), hence the importance of being as prepared as possible. PLAN AHEAD!!!
I also have my entertainment center bolted to the wall with “L Brackets” & I put rubbery meshy shelf liner under things so they don’t slide off shelves, etc. (I only lost 2 glasses - neither I had this under & a big heavy expensive vase was just fine that was next to it).
I keep a whole set of clothes at the front of the house along with shoes & a jacket – just in case (after a big one, I’ve been known to sleep with my clothes on – just in case I need to run!!).
ELECTRICITY GOING OUT - I had one of the guys with the power company share an IMPORTANT HINT with me to help prevent potential problems – in the case of a power failure, you might want to shut off all your power switches from the main box but say one or two key ones as he said there IS the POTENTIAL of frying your electrical system via a power surge when the power comes back on (evidently this seems to be especially prevalent when they turned your electricity like they like to do if you’re a couple days late from paying your bill in Costa Rica!!).
In times after a large earthquake & knowing more strong aftershocks can happen (or when I know we’re going to have a scheduled power outage) I turn my fridge & freezer up to 8-9 so things will last longer.
Put Latches on Cabinet Doors (especially where you have breakables – saves you cleanup/work time!]) – even if only a Friction Catch - http://worksafetech.com/pages/Cabinet_Latches.html
We’ve been taught to stand in a doorway but I find that MANY doorways in Costa Rica are WOOD framed. NOT enough to support much of anything hence having SERIOUS potential to kill you!!
Get to know & CARE about your neighbors!! You may just need each other in case of an emergency!! You can share tools, help each other, share food, have a party (that’s what we did in the San Francisco earthquake – since we had no electricity in the whole area & it didn’t seem like it was going to come on any time soon, all the neighbors brought their food out of the fridge, alcohol & we feasted & partied all night (some of us [ok – me!!] figuring if something worse happened, we’d feel it less if we were drunk!!). Being new in the complex, I hadn’t known many of my neighbors, which I got to know FAST!!! This is ESPECIALLY important for people that are single &/or have any health issues/special needs.
With your family/housemates, have an “escape route” (as you would in case of a fire).
In areas with serious damage – put out a white flag out after the quake if everyone and everything is OK.
THINGS I FEEL ARE IMPORTANT TO HAVE TO BE AS PREPARED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AGAIN (& you KNOW it WILL living in Costa Rica):
7 STEPS TO EARTHQUAKE SAFETY
STEP #1: Identify potential hazards in your home and begin to fix them.
STEP #2: Create a disaster-preparedness plan.
STEP #3: Prepare disaster supplies kits.
STEP #4: Identify your building's potential weaknesses and begin to fix them.
STEP #5: Protect yourself during earthquake shaking- drop, cover, and hold on.
STEP #6: After the earthquake, check for injuries and damage.
STEP #7: When safe, continue to follow your disaster-preparedness plan.
THINGS TO HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES
BAGS: Heavy-duty BIG plastic bags for waste disposal (or as a rain poncho).
BATTERIES: LOTS of extras in various sizes (check or better yet, change them at least once or twice a year). Personally, though I normally use them, in this case, I would NOT relying on re-chargeables since they tend to not last as long & you may not have electricity to re-charge them.
BLANKETS: If you’re in an area that sometimes get colder – you might want to have some Solar Blankets.
BLEACH: To add to the water if needed.
BOOTS / STURDY SHOES:
BUCKET - BIG WITH a Lid (to go to the bathroom in [especially helpful if it’s outside & you can dump it in a pile of dirt] unless you have plenty of stored water to flush it down [this is a good time to enact the “When it is yellow, be mellow. BUTANE LIGHTER: (for lighting candles. Do NOT use matches as they get soggy with humidity)
CANDLES - TEA: Tea candles are best as they do NOT drip & last 3-4 hours on average. You can get a bag of 100 at PriceSmart for around 3,000. The markets have small boxes of them.

CAR: Extra tire, jumper cables, taper thing to break the window, fuses, inspection lights, Flat Tire Fixer, tow ropes, traffic cones, reflecting triangles.

VOICEMAIL ON YOUR HOME PHONE (as well as cell of course): I think chances are better of electricity being off (hence a personal answering machine not working) vs. the ICE voicemail system going down. Create a plan with select people that Goddess forbid, if you cell dies, someone else has your code to get into your voicemail & can leave a message saying you’re ok or where they can reach you otherwise. ESPECIALLY have someone NOT in your area. Also, have someone out of your area that can call your friends/people concerned to let them know you’re ok (which means giving them a list of all emails/phone #s).
WALKIE TALKIES
WATER - PURIFIED/DRINKING: I ALWAYS have at LEAST one 5-gallon bottle of purified water (ideally a bunch of individual water bottles for each person which would mean a siphon to pour it into). A DRINKING WATER PUMP is smart (if you have it up on a stand, aftershocks may knock it over. You can find these at the market where you find the 5-gallon bottles).
I also have a 5-gallon bottle filled with tap water that I put under the cupboards in each bathroom for when the water goes out (& you KNOW it does in Costa Rica).
Water for each family member for at least one to two weeks (allow at least 1 gallon per person per day to cover for drinking, cleaning & cooking) and purification tablets or chlorine bleach to purify drinking water from other sources.

PRESERVING WATER - Pure or distilled water doesn't need to be preserved. It will stay fresh literally forever. It will take on the taste of the container it's in and it looses it's dissolved oxygen. Water from the tap is pure enough to last indefinitely. You get into trouble if there's some kind of food for bacteria in the water. The loss of the oxygen makes it taste flat. When you decide to drink it just pour it back and forth between a couple of containers and it will taste OK. Chlorine is use to purify water. Four or five drops of house hold bleach in a gallon will kill most anything of an organic nature in the water after you let it set a while. The chlorine is used up in oxidizing the impurities so the amount is determined by just how much stuff is in the water. If there's too much chlorine in it you will taste it and you can again pour it between a couple of containers to let the excess escape before you drink it. This is good in an extreme emergency. Of course you settle out the mud first. Things like oil and hydrocarbons ruin the whole process.
WHISTLE: Smart idea!! - oOne for each person in the house that they keep in their bedroom plus a few in this kit. This could be a lifesaver!
WIPES: I have a big can of these - one for personal care (like Baby Wipes. Good in place of showers. These are QUITE expensive in CR but Pequeño Mundo has them in their Kids area for quite cheap!!) & one Antiseptic like for the Kitchen (PriceSmart carries 3 of the big cans for around $20 [to me WELL worth the investment!!])
WOMEN – PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS (like sanitary napkins, etc. if you’re still in that way!)
MISC: Depending on where you live you might want to have Insect Repellant, Sunscreen, Rain Ponchos, Jacket.

COSTA RICA WAS HIT BY A 6.2 EARTHQUAKE ON JAN. 8, '09. Not overly strong by traditional standards & we were blessed that it was in a more rural location about 20 miles north of San Jose, hence didn't have the casualties it could have been worse but it was freaky in that because of the motion & recent rains, it seems like in some ways the ground just opened up taking whatever was in it's way which you can see in some pictures at:

THINGS TO HAVE TO HELP BE A BIT MORE PREPARED FOR FUTURE EARTHQUAKES IN COSTA RICA
DARE TO BE PREPARED!!!
This blurb is a compilation of info I’ve pieced together from LOTS of resources, as well as my observations/experiences growing up in California & experiencing LOTS of earthquakes of varying magnitudes!! I’m a BIG believer that having information helps us be more EMPOWERMENT so WHEN something happens (& it WILL living in Costa Rica!!), we can hopefully react more consciously hence handle everything better & be able to help others more!! This document is NOT the gospel & I’m NOT a professional (though I’m waiting for a friend’s response to it that’s out there on the line as a Emergency Response Expert).
I used to keep a “Bag” filled with the items listed below. It was a duffel bag on wheels so it’s easy to grab & drag out. Now I keep most of the things in 2 places but writing this I’m thinking it might be smart to go back to that bag again - just in case. A Backpack is good if you want to put the ultra basics in.
One “hit” I got after one of my friends was given 20 min. to run into her home that was destroyed in the last big San Francisco earthquake was to have one small bag that if you HAD to run for your life - what would be the MOST IMPORTANT things you’d want to take like documents, photos, jewels, special keepsakes.
Another “hit” I JUST got was to batten down the hatches some more so I had my friend looped extra wire tied a few times around screws - securing mirrors, clocks & wall art.
Assume if a major earthquake/disaster happens that most everything will be closed down at least for a few days &/or power has resumed &/or supplies will be limited/non-existent - banks, stores, gas stations, public transportation (to say nothing of restaurants!), hence the importance of being as prepared as possible. PLAN AHEAD!!!
I also have my entertainment center bolted to the wall with “L Brackets” & I put rubbery meshy shelf liner under things so they don’t slide off shelves, etc. (I only lost 2 glasses - neither I had this under & a big heavy expensive vase was just fine that was next to it).
I keep a whole set of clothes at the front of the house along with shoes & a jacket – just in case (after a big one, I’ve been known to sleep with my clothes on – just in case I need to run!!).
ELECTRICITY GOING OUT - I had one of the guys with the power company share an IMPORTANT HINT with me to help prevent potential problems – in the case of a power failure, you might want to shut off all your power switches from the main box but say one or two key ones as he said there IS the POTENTIAL of frying your electrical system via a power surge when the power comes back on (evidently this seems to be especially prevalent when they turned your electricity like they like to do if you’re a couple days late from paying your bill in Costa Rica!!).
In times after a large earthquake & knowing more strong aftershocks can happen (or when I know we’re going to have a scheduled power outage) I turn my fridge & freezer up to 8-9 so things will last longer.
Put Latches on Cabinet Doors (especially where you have breakables – saves you cleanup/work time!]) – even if only a Friction Catch - http://worksafetech.com/pages/Cabinet_Latches.html
We’ve been taught to stand in a doorway but I find that MANY doorways in Costa Rica are WOOD framed. NOT enough to support much of anything hence having SERIOUS potential to kill you!!
Get to know & CARE about your neighbors!! You may just need each other in case of an emergency!! You can share tools, help each other, share food, have a party (that’s what we did in the San Francisco earthquake – since we had no electricity in the whole area & it didn’t seem like it was going to come on any time soon, all the neighbors brought their food out of the fridge, alcohol & we feasted & partied all night (some of us [ok – me!!] figuring if something worse happened, we’d feel it less if we were drunk!!). Being new in the complex, I hadn’t known many of my neighbors, which I got to know FAST!!! This is ESPECIALLY important for people that are single &/or have any health issues/special needs.
With your family/housemates, have an “escape route” (as you would in case of a fire).
In areas with serious damage – put out a white flag out after the quake if everyone and everything is OK.
THINGS I FEEL ARE IMPORTANT TO HAVE TO BE AS PREPARED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AGAIN (& you KNOW it WILL living in Costa Rica):
7 STEPS TO EARTHQUAKE SAFETY
STEP #1: Identify potential hazards in your home and begin to fix them.
STEP #2: Create a disaster-preparedness plan.
STEP #3: Prepare disaster supplies kits.
STEP #4: Identify your building's potential weaknesses and begin to fix them.
STEP #5: Protect yourself during earthquake shaking- drop, cover, and hold on.
STEP #6: After the earthquake, check for injuries and damage.
STEP #7: When safe, continue to follow your disaster-preparedness plan.
THINGS TO HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES
BAGS: Heavy-duty BIG plastic bags for waste disposal (or as a rain poncho).
BATTERIES: LOTS of extras in various sizes (check or better yet, change them at least once or twice a year). Personally, though I normally use them, in this case, I would NOT relying on re-chargeables since they tend to not last as long & you may not have electricity to re-charge them.
BLANKETS: If you’re in an area that sometimes get colder – you might want to have some Solar Blankets.
BLEACH: To add to the water if needed.
BOOTS / STURDY SHOES:
BUCKET - BIG WITH a Lid (to go to the bathroom in [especially helpful if it’s outside & you can dump it in a pile of dirt] unless you have plenty of stored water to flush it down [this is a good time to enact the “When it is yellow, be mellow. TURN OFF YOUR MASTER ELECTRICAL SWITCH (when the power goes back on again - it could be such a surge that it could fry your outlets & what’s connected to them).

VOICEMAIL ON YOUR HOME PHONE (as well as cell of course): I think chances are better of electricity being off (hence a personal answering machine not working) vs. the ICE voicemail system going down. Create a plan with select people that Goddess forbid, if you cell dies, someone else has your code to get into your voicemail & can leave a message saying you’re ok or where they can reach you otherwise. ESPECIALLY have someone NOT in your area. Also, have someone out of your area that can call your friends/people concerned to let them know you’re ok (which means giving them a list of all emails/phone #s).
WALKIE TALKIES
WATER - PURIFIED/DRINKING: I ALWAYS have at LEAST one 5-gallon bottle of purified water (ideally a bunch of individual water bottles for each person which would mean a siphon to pour it into). A DRINKING WATER PUMP is smart (if you have it up on a stand, aftershocks may knock it over. You can find these at the market where you find the 5-gallon bottles).
I also have a 5-gallon bottle filled with tap water that I put under the cupboards in each bathroom for when the water goes out (& you KNOW it does in Costa Rica).
Water for each family member for at least one to two weeks (allow at least 1 gallon per person per day to cover for drinking, cleaning & cooking) and purification tablets or chlorine bleach to purify drinking water from other sources.

PRESERVING WATER - Pure or distilled water doesn't need to be preserved. It will stay fresh literally forever. It will take on the taste of the container it's in and it looses it's dissolved oxygen. Water from the tap is pure enough to last indefinitely. You get into trouble if there's some kind of food for bacteria in the water. The loss of the oxygen makes it taste flat. When you decide to drink it just pour it back and forth between a couple of containers and it will taste OK. Chlorine is use to purify water. Four or five drops of house hold bleach in a gallon will kill most anything of an organic nature in the water after you let it set a while. The chlorine is used up in oxidizing the impurities so the amount is determined by just how much stuff is in the water. If there's too much chlorine in it you will taste it and you can again pour it between a couple of containers to let the excess escape before you drink it. This is good in an extreme emergency. Of course you settle out the mud first. Things like oil and hydrocarbons ruin the whole process.
WHISTLE: Smart idea!! - oOne for each person in the house that they keep in their bedroom plus a few in this kit. This could be a lifesaver!
WIPES: I have a big can of these - one for personal care (like Baby Wipes. Good in place of showers. These are QUITE expensive in CR but Pequeño Mundo has them in their Kids area for quite cheap!!) & one Antiseptic like for the Kitchen (PriceSmart carries 3 of the big cans for around $20 [to me WELL worth the investment!!])
WOMEN – PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS (like sanitary napkins, etc. if you’re still in that way!)
MISC: Depending on where you live you might want to have Insect Repellant, Sunscreen, Rain Ponchos, Jacket.

![VILLA VERDE - POZOS DE SANTA ANA : Before moving to Costa Rica, I searched for 2 trips/WEEKS seeing MANY homes & compounds but nothing really "felt right" - UNTIL I found the compound pictured below!!!
It was BY FAR the BEST compound/community I found after searching for a couple of weeks - especially for "security", GREAT feel, connection with nature & BY FAR - the BEST for FAMILIES as many kids roam freely/safely here!!
It's a MAGICAL space (the only reason I moved from it was because I wanted to do a Guesthouse/retreat property/workshop space like I'm doing now - http://FountiansGuesthouse.com / http://HouseOfSelfEmpowerment.com).
It's surrounded by a large metal wall throughout & a SOLID guards gate that checks EVERY visitor! They have 19 homes - 4 of them lived in from the family that owns the quinta & have a LARGE pool (though not heated so it's COLD!!), basketball court, rancho, BEAUTIFUL grounds. Most of the homes do NOT have bars in front (just in the back).
I don't believe they accept pets any more. The homes don't have their owned private fenced in area though most I've seen have a little back patio or little courtyard type area.
I really liked living in Pozos de Santa Ana in this area as it was still like an old Tico town (I felt safe doing my daily walks). Daily I could hear at least a horse or two galloping by (my home with the one closest to the road) yet just around the corner is the heart of the newest gringo area - the road that leads between Santa Ana & Belen heading towards the airport so you have SOOOOO MANY restaurants, shops, Forum 2 [Forum 1 is just off the Pista/highway]+++ nearby (but you don't feel it!!). You also have buses in the area.
Currently my old home is for rent!!

This is the "A-Framed" UNfurnished, 3-bedroom, plus HUGE upstairs LOFT (GREAT for a family/play room &/or office or take it all over for a 4th bedroom. It also has a full bathroom), 3 bathroom (showers only), detached home I lived in (pictured below from when I lived there). It has a VERY open feeling with LOTS of windows (no bars on the front windows)!! I even liked doing dishes here as it had a BEAUTIFUL tropical plants/trees view out the window (see picture ____ This is SOOOOO RARE as I'm SOOO NON-Domestic Goddess!!)!!! I LOVED living in it!!!!

WHAT: There will be a very powerful Deeksha event with Gabriela Dasa from Argentina, an international leader in the Oneness Blessings movement. Her workshops are very powerful.

Deeksha / Diksha is an Initiation, an intelligent energy that affects the perception of the Universe, and ourselves accelerating the awakening and liberation process during our return journey to Oneness; it is a unique experience for each person. The Oneness University has created the Oneness Blessing or Diksha, which has been happening to millions of people around the planet since 1996.
There are no pre-requisites and it does not require any type of personal effort before or after.
Diksha is liberation:
* From the past.
* From our limited conditioning.
* From mind interference and obsessions.
* From the separation perception.
* From the inner battle through acceptance.
Suffering is born from the way we perceive facts, comes from our resistance of experimenting and accepting reality the way it is. Comes from the illusion that I am separate from the rest, and I am capable of controlling this reality. Comes from a genetic pattern of fear of dying that keeps us enslaved in a limited experience of reality. When the illusion of the fixed and separate “I” dies, is when we really start to live.
Content of the workshop:
Meditations and chanting to induce the process.
Revelations or “Diksha Words” oriented to promote an inner realization or impact in the consciousness of the spiritual awakening and self-knowledge. This Revelations are delivered depending on the nature of the group and flow of the workshop.
Deeksha or Initiations for self-awakening and realization.
Yoga practice with Chakras to promote the reception of the Deeksha.

“On February 1996, a fervent wish to know what Sr Bhagavan offered, took her from Buenos Aires to Nema, India. For the 1st time, after a decade of intense searching, had the grace of experience Divine Love and Joy in her heart…
That same year, with immense joy, they received Acharya Sri Ananada Giri in Buenos Aires, which was on his first trip to the West.
From then on, Gabriela has traveled to India 15 times where she has participated in more than 10 seminars offered by Oneness University and conducted by her Guides and Sri Anananda Giri. She has also been in teaching sessions with Sri Bhagaván himself during her guide training.
During 2000 Gabriela started to conduct programs for the Oneness University and she became a Diksha Facilitator in 2004. She opened the work in Colombia, Central America and supported the beginning of the Diksha’s workshops in Greece.
She has conducted more than 140 events in many countries to support the vision of her beloved Bhagaván.
Today, she coordinates Argentina, Central America and is the former coordinator of Colombia.

![Changes at The Fountains Guesthouse : Hola Former Guests!
Just touchin' to see how ya'll are doing?!?!? I hope in the times we're in, we're ALL hangin' in there or BETTER!! We're in the peak of Rainy Season! LOTS of rain but soon it should be tappering off! We've had decent weather the majority of the day in the past few days!!
We're really hosting more & more Workshops!! Check out our upcoming workshops at . http://HouseOfSelfEmpowerment.com Next month we have some more Feng Shui workshops lead by Costa Rican Feng Shui Master Iside Sarmiento (http://FengShuiCostaRica.com).
The Fountains Guesthouse/House of Self Empowerment just hosted a few Book & Clothing Yard Sales benefiting a few charities around Costa Rica. We didn't make much money but our friend Diane helped remind me that we were recycling things & bringing new joy to the items!! This week we plan on distributing the left over clothes to various charities & even in the youth jails as often they don't even have a blanket let alone a bed to sleep on! We've already given a few BIG bags to the sisters up at the Park in Centro Escazu who give them away in the park to people in need!
Vicki's big pet project is a new program called "Gracias Costa Rica"! I'm a BIG believer that every tourist & non-native that's blessed to visit or live in Costa Rica should gift back to the land/people of Costa Rica. One of those ways is encouraging people to give/bring donations of various things REALLY needed like clothes, shoes (being collected for Helping Hands Walk a Mile In Their Shoes program), medical supplies (including unused vitamins, medication, first aid supplies++), SCHOOL SUPPLIES (MOST desperately needed as the start of the new school year is right around the corner & imagine the stress MANY mothers are feeling to cloth & provide their kids with all the supplies they MUST have for school. How can they do that when MANY are making around $200 a MONTH [the average salary for a housekeeper!!]???), old soccer uniforms, office supplies/equipment, ANYTHING for a baby from formula, toys, clothes++.

![HELPING HANDS "WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES" Campaign - Shoes For Sale : Helping Hands Costa Rica recently received a FABULOUS DONATION of 4 big duffle bags FULL of VERY gently used AND NEW shoes (around 80 pairs) from the CORMIER family (Ted, Kristen, Haley, Hanna & Teddy) of Conneticut (first picture) on their visit to Costa Rica!! They gathered donations from friends and classmates!
One bag was FILLED with school and art supplies that were split between Gail Nystrom's CR Humanitarian Foundation & our upcoming benefactors of HH's Burger & Beer Fundraiser (Sun. May 11 from noon-5pm at Rock & Roll Pollo in Santa Ana. Inquire to 8-378-6679 for more details) - Patronato Nacional de Rehabilatcion (National Foundation for Rehabilitation).
Helping Hands "Walk A Mile In Their Shoes" campaign's goal is to collect a miles worth of gently used & new shoes! A mile's worth of shoes is around 5,000!!!
What we're doing in the mean time, when we get NICE donations like what we received from the Cormiers, we first try selling them (at The House Of Self Empowerment - ON Calle Vieja in Escazu) & the money raised goes to Gail's CR Humanitarian Foundation as we can make a lot more money on them ourselves.
Things that aren't sold are donated to Gail & she sells them to her people (many of which live in The Carpio [home to many of the poorest of the poor people]) for 500 or so colones (so it's not a disempowering handout). The money raised goes to help support their medical facilities and other needs!!!
